Drawtober #1: Vampire
A tough one for sure.
This vampire is based on some sketches I made of a vampire last year, initially for a Halloween mini comic (may revisit that one). I wanted to play by one of Bram Stoker's Dracula rules; "unable to transform until noon, dawn and dusk." I accidentally included "casts no shadow" because I was utterly fed up with this painting, so I quit. I wanted to avoid the most common thing I see about vampires, the pale skin (an attempt was made). I also don't feel like I don't see enough vampires in simple, less ornate clothing, so I opted for this vest and slacks look. The idea of this was to make the vampire look like they were about to go on the hunt at dusk when they could transform and feast. Pretend the clock is broken. Broken clock stuck at past noon aside, I like how some of it turned out, chiefly the clock, and trying to make the sun look like it's being cast on the vampire. It just wasn't turning out how I wanted it to in general. Not my favorite, not my least favorite, but certainly an exercise in doing something a little different than normal.
This was a little rushed because I let my writing hobby get the better of me and it’s not perfect. Possibly as a result of such a small canvas, a 9x12” watercolor sheet cut in half width-wise and most certainly because of my lack of experience with watercolor. I have missed painting quite a bit. My digital colors tend to be bright, but I can also appreciate the muted tones of my traditional art. Let’s hope #2 is better!
